Shirabad Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Upper Albian (K12), K1, D1, C2, C2a

Province:
SW Tajik, Central W Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

Includes in Khation Region, Darvaz District, Dushanbe - west Shirkent-Luchob, Dushanbe - east Shirkent-Luchob.

Upper substage of the Aptian stage and Albian stage in the Turkestan, Zarafshan-Gissar, South Gissar, Karategin, Dushanbe, Qafirnigan, Vakhsh, Zaalai and Darvaz districts includes five horizons: 1 – Karakuz (Upper Aptian - Lower Albian); 2 - Derbent (Lower Albian); 3 - Babatag (Middle Albian); 4 – Akkapchigay (Upper Albian); 5 - Shirabad (Upper Albian). Corresponding to these are variegated sandstones, argillites and clays containing layers of limestone, less often gypsum and conglomerates. Their total thickness is 100-800 m.

In the Darvaz region, the Shirabad horizon corresponds to the Khosretishinskaya suite (хозретишинокая свита) (Andreev et al., 1969).

Synonym: Shirabad suite, Shirabad horizon, Ширабадскому горизонту, Khosretishin Fm, Khosretishinskaya suite, хозретишинокая свита, Sherabad horizon, Sherabad Fm,

Lithology and Thickness

In the Darvaz region, it is represented by red-colored sandstones and siltstones with a thickness of 150 m. The Sherabad horizon in the Zeravshan-Gissar region corresponds to the upper part of the Fandaryn suite, represented by red-colored sandy-siltstone rocks with a thickness of 30-40 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the Akkapchingay Fm in Afghan-Tajik Basin column. The coeval Kosretishin Fm conformably or with slight erosion overlies deposits of Berriasian, Middle Aptian or Upper Hauterivian - Middle Aptian.

Upper contact

Underlies the Tubegatan Fm in the Afghan-Tajik Basin stratigraphy.

Regional extent

Afghan-Tajik Basin. In the Darvaz region, the Shirabad horizon corresponds to the Khosretishinskaya suite (хозретишинокая свита) (Andreev et al., 1969). In the South Gissar, this is the Beshkapskaya suite (Dzhalilov et al., 1971), composed of greenish-gray sandstones and siltstones with layers of limestone.
